New Mexico's Rail Runner Senior Express to the Roundhouse
On March 4, the New Mexico Alliance for Retired Americans caught the Rail Runner train to visit the the 2009 Legislative Session at the state Capitol. making stops in Los Ranchos, Sandoval, and Santa Fe, members visited the Roundhouse to visit with legislators and lobby on behalf of seniors' issues, tour the Capitol and art galleries within the Capitol complex, and gather information about community resources and services.Alliance Lobby Week 2009
In over 70 meetings during Lobby Week with their U.S. Representatives and Senators, activists with the Alliance for Retired Americans outlined measures to lower the cost of prescription drugs, strengthen the Medicare Trust Fund, and expand Medicare coverage for retirees age 55-64.Specifically, participants supported: Allowing Medicare to negotiate volume discounts with drug manufacturers. The Veterans Administration does this and its prescriptions cost 30 percent less; Ending wasteful taxpayer subsidies to private insurance companies who run Medicare Advantage programs at a cost nearly 20 percent higher than Medicare; and Providing early retirees the option to purchase Medicare coverage. Many of the 5.1 million Americans between 55-64 who lack health insurance are victims of mass layoffs. Alliance members will called upon their lawmakers to form Seniors Advisory Committees, and also to support the Employee Free Choice Act to help workers negotiate for higher wages and health care and retirement benefits.|

Social Security's 73rd Birthday
To mark Social Security's birthday on August 14, the Alliance celebrated Social Security's 73rd birthday with 25 grassroots events from Oregon to Florida lauding the program that has kept millions of Americans out of poverty and by promising to continue fighting privatization efforts. On July 7, Senator John McCain (R-AZ) said, "Americans have got to understand that we are paying present-day retirees with the taxes paid by young workers in America today. And that's a disgrace. It's an absolute disgrace, and it's got to be fixed." Alliance members protested these comments outside Republican headquarters and McCain offices in Raleigh, North Carolina, Portland, Oregon and Phoenix, Arizona, and asked Senators John Sununu (R-NH) and Gordon Smith (R-OR) to denounce their colleague's comments in Manchester, New Hampshire and Salem, Oregon, respectively. The Senator was also shadowed by the Alliance on his visits to York, Pennsylvania and Aspen, Colorado this week. Additionally, birthday cakes and cards were presented with thanks to Social Security Administration offices in Green Bay, Madison, and Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Morgantown, West Virginia; Raleigh and Winston-Salem, North Carolina; Tallahassee, Port St. Lucie, Lake Mary, and Valrico, Florida; Albuquerque, New Mexico; Reading, Pennsylvania; Tyler, Texas; and Montpelier, Vermont. More events are planned through next week.Livestrong Event - Columbus, Ohio
As Senator McCain spoke on July 24 at Lance Armstrong’s yearly summit on cancer, the Ohio Alliance made their presence known to highlight McCain’s poor record on Medicare, health care, and Social Security. Field organizer Norm Wernet, a cancer survivor, pointed out that, while McCain says he supports additional funding for cancer research, he voted against federal funding for cancer research at the James Cancer Center at Ohio State University Medical Center. The senator voted against the funds because they were considered earmarks, but Wernet says earmarks are not always bad and are an important source of cancer research funding.|

South Carolina Founding Convention
On June 13, South Carolina has became the newest state affiliate of the Alliance for Retired Americans, receiving its formal charter before a crowd of almost 50 activists at a founding convention. The South Carolina Alliance for Retired Americans (SCARA) works with the national Alliance to create a powerful statewide network of union and community-based retiree organizations. The organization is committed to building a strong grassroots organization and will be a valuable source of leaders and activists who will work together on legislative issues important to seniors.Arizona Social Security Event 30708
About 25 people, mostly seniors, picketed outside the Social Security office in central Phoenix on Friday to protest Sen. John McCain's proposal to revive the idea of privatizing Social Security.|
