TOMORROW'S SENIORS WILL FACE LIFE OF DESPAIR IF PRESIDENT'S SOCIAL SECURITY CUTS ARE ENACTED - Middle Class Again Bears Burden of Bush Callousness
Statement on President Bush's news conference, attributed to George Kourpias, President of the Alliance for Retired Americans
Washington, DC—"If George Bush has his way, America is headed for a return to the days when old age was synonymous with despair and hopelessness. Massive Social Security benefit cuts aimed at the middle class, coupled with rising costs of housing, health care and food spell disaster for this country's aging population.
"If the president is truly serious about solving Social Security's long-term cash flow challenges, then he should roll back the tax cuts he doled out to the wealthiest of Americans rather than slash benefit checks the middle class has earned and deserve at retirement. George Bush has once again shown his true colors and made a choice to side with the rich over the most deserving.
"Nothing the president has proposed will help guarantee a decent standard of living. America's seniors have for decades known they can rely on when they retire. Instead, this president's plan for demolishing Social Security is to destroy the crucial safety net the majority of Americans plan for and depend on. Future benefits determined by a means-based formula are nothing but a disguise for a mean-spirited agenda that seriously undercuts the security and well being of America's middle class."
Media Note: The Alliance will be releasing Monday, May 2, a 12-minute video - "Saving Social Security" - narrated by Oscar-winning actress Olympia Dukakis.
