Wednesday, February 1, 2006State of the Union reaction statement by George J. Kourpias, President of the Alliance for Retired Americans, a nationwide grassroots advocacy organization representing three million retired workers:
"This country's seniors need a leader who acknowledges mistakes and takes responsibility for fixing a prescription drug bill that is the poster child of the Bush administration's 'profits over people' approach to governing.
President Bush ignored a prime opportunity to tell America's seniors how he intends to fix the disastrous prescription drug benefit and chose instead to again tout the hollow hype of privatization as the cure-all for what ails the American health care system.
He is proposing to do for health care what he's already tried with Social Security - shift the cost burden on to the backs of hard-working Americans, all the while rewarding special interests. Health savings accounts are not the solution to America's health care crisis.
We need a president who has the fortitude and stamina to rise above the culture of corruption that permeates the Republican Party and do what is right for all Americans, not just America's most wealthy."
