Senator Hillary Clinton Thanks
Alliance Retirees for Their Commitment, Dedication

Presidential Candidate speaks to Hundreds of Seniors Gathered at Alliance for Retired Americans’ Legislative Conference

Democratic Presidential candidate and Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY) today pledged her support for improving the health care and economic well-being of current and future retirees.  She made those remarks to six hundred seniors who had gathered to learn about advocating for the rights of current and future retirees concerning issues of importance to older Americans.

Senator Clinton strongly supported the Alliance’s work, saying the organization is a voice for “positive change.”  In her remarks, she thanked Alliance members for standing against President Bush’s ill-advised retiree policies and made clear her belief that seniors should be able to retire in comfort and with dignity.

The Senator focused on health care, declaring that her plan would cover everybody while lowering costs and improving quality.

Talking about the importance of Social Security, Senator Clinton said that privatization would be “off the table” if she were to become President.  She also said that she would not raid the Social Security Trust Fund.

In addition, the 2008 presidential candidate mentioned the need for affordable prescription drugs, stating that allowing re-importation and permitting Medicare to negotiate lower prices would save billions of dollars.  Senator Clinton declared that Americans should not have to fend for themselves during their golden years.

All 2008 candidates for President were invited to the conference.  Rep. Dennis Kucinich and Elizabeth Edwards, wife of former Senator John Edwards, will address the retirees on Friday.
