For Immediate Release
Retired Americans Welcome Back Senator Kennedy
First Vote was to Strengthen Medicare
The following statement was issued today by George J. Kourpias, President of the Alliance for Retired Americans.
“On behalf of the 3.5 million members of the Alliance for Retired Americans, I want to welcome back Senator M. Kennedy to Washington, D.C. He has been in our daily thoughts and prayers during these difficult past few months.
“It is fitting that the first vote Senator Kennedy cast upon his return was in favor of a bill to strengthen Medicare. Thanks to Senator Kennedy and his colleagues, physicians will continue to treat Medicare patients, low-income seniors will receive extra assistance with their health care costs, and Medicare Advantage programs will be reformed so that more money goes to seniors and not large corporations.
“Medicare is a pillar of retirement
security, and a cornerstone of the progressive
social policy Senator Kennedy has championed
throughout his historic Senate career. I
can think of no better way to welcome him back
to work.”
