Retired Americans Outraged at Senator McCain Calling Social Security “a Disgrace”
Comments Reveal Ignorance of Seniors’ Needs
The following statement was issued today by Edward F. Coyle, Executive Director of the Alliance for Retired Americans.
“Senator John McCain revealed how badly out of touch he is with the needs of the American people when he called Social Security “a disgrace.”
“This is one of the most insensitive, anti-senior comments I have ever heard from a public official. Nearly one million Arizona residents get Social Security benefits, and the comments by their Senator must come as quite a shock.
“42 million Americans will be surprised to find out that the program they rely on each month is something Senator McCain called “a disgrace.” Social Security has kept millions of Americans out of poverty.
“President Bush’s plan to privatize Social Security threatened the economic health of older Americans. But the comments made by Senator McCain – a staunch supporter of the Bush plan – add insult to injury by being so grossly insensitive and out of touch with the needs of the American people.”
