ALLIANCE FOR RETIRED AMERICANS ASSAILS PRIVATIZATION'S SURPLUS SCHEME - Alliance President Says House Bill Irresponsible, Designed to Destroy Social Security
Attribute following statement to George J. Kourpias, president of the Alliance for Retired Americans:
"The idea of raiding Social Security's surplus to fund risky private accounts proves those who want to weaken and destroy Social Security will stop at nothing. Social Security's surplus should be used for one and one purpose only: to fund the guaranteed benefits Americans earned and deserve.
"Private accounts - whether funded with payroll taxes or from the surplus - are a bad idea and the American public knows it. Republicans and President Bush clearly intend to push their ideological agenda and the House's plan is the latest in the pro-privatizers bait and switch game.
"What was proposed today would make even Charles Ponzi blush.
"Perhaps those who plan to raid the surplus should first check with President Bush, who has claimed Social Security's surplus is nothing more than 'meaningless I.O.U.s' It's time to kill the idea of private accounts and propose real solutions to strengthening Social Security."
